Oklahoma Tornado Season 2023 Predictions

Highest Total of Tornadoes by Month or Season and Year

2023 Tornado Season Update for Oklahoma

So far in 2023, Oklahoma residents have already witnessed five tornadoes touching down in the state. This is a concerning trend, as the state typically sees an average of only one or two tornadoes per year. AccuWeather predicts that 1055 to 1200 twisters will touch down across the United States throughout 2023, which is slightly below the historical average.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the highest total number of tornadoes ever recorded in a single year in the United States was 1,737 in 1974. The deadliest tornado year on record was 1936, when 695 people were killed by tornadoes. The deadliest single tornado in U.S. history was the Tri-State Tornado, which killed 695 people and injured over 2,000 as it traveled through Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana on March 18, 1925.

The NWS issues tornado watches and warnings to help people stay safe during severe weather events. A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop. A tornado warning means that a tornado has been spotted or is indicated by radar. When a tornado warning is issued, people should take shelter immediately in a sturdy building.

If you are caught outside during a tornado, the NWS recommends that you find a low-lying area and lie down flat, covering your head with your hands. You should also be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to move to a more sheltered location if necessary.
